Coronado, California Hosts Annual Neptune Olympics

The Coronado High School NJROTC Islander Company organized the annual Neptune Olympics on Saturday, September 6, attracting over 125 cadets from 11 schools throughout Southern California. The event, which took place at the Crown Cove Aquatics Center, aimed to foster aquatic competition and teamwork among participating cadets.

This year, the Neptune Olympics featured a range of activities categorized into three main areas: water races, tactical rescue simulations, and beach-based challenges. The entire event was planned and executed by the students of the NJROTC program, showcasing their leadership and organizational skills.

Event Overview

The water races included several exciting challenges such as:

  • Kayak Race
  • Surfboard Race
  • Paddleboard Race

In addition to water races, participants engaged in coordinated group swims and even a creative sandcastle building contest. One of the standout events was the Zodiac Hostage Rescue, which involved seven-person teams divided into six rescuers and one hostage. Rescuers paddled a Zodiac boat to reach the hostage, with three team members tasked with retrieving the hostage while one member played a designated ‘casualty’. This challenge focused on teamwork, timing, and effective communication among team members.

Competition Results

At the conclusion of the day, Ramona High School emerged victorious, earning first place overall in the competition. The event’s success was highlighted by the celebration of core values such as leadership, camaraderie, and enjoyment, which are fundamental to the NJROTC program.
