Coronado – Tim Chin has been appointed as the new executive director of Emerald Keepers, a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing environmental impact in the community. This newly created position aims to strengthen the organization’s ability to assess and improve its contributions to the environment, with Chin focusing on measurable environmental, social, and economic impacts as a guiding principle.

Chin, who moved permanently to Coronado in June with his wife, Tina Twite, previously visited the area for many years. They have two adult children who reside in Newport Beach. He holds a degree in industrial technology from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and possesses a background in energy efficiency and sustainable building practices.

In his professional career, Chin has managed large teams of building engineers and has been instrumental in achieving Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for various projects. In 2006, he launched the Southern California office of Enovity, a firm that specializes in energy services. Following a company restructuring in 2023, Chin transitioned into a consulting role while accepting his new position with Emerald Keepers.

Chin was chosen from a pool of seven applicants by Emerald Keepers’ board, which commended his unparalleled leadership experience. His responsibilities will include overseeing daily operations and serving as the organization’s primary spokesperson. His goals encompass advancements in water, waste, air, and energy conservation, with a commitment to engaging residents, businesses, military personnel, government officials, and visitors to help preserve Coronado’s natural beauty.

One of Chin’s foremost environmental concerns is the issue of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), particularly in relation to single-use plastics. Emerald Keepers operates with the motto of keeping Coronado “Emerald Green, Ocean Blue,” which reflects its dedication to environmental stewardship.

In line with this commitment, Chin has actively participated in the community’s cleanup efforts, often walking his dog, Dakota, while picking up trash as part of Emerald Keepers’ initiatives. The organization recently introduced the “Little Free Bag Library” at Boney’s Bayside Market, encouraging community members to contribute reusable bags to help reduce waste from single-use plastics.

Beyond local initiatives, Emerald Keepers has created partnerships with local businesses to further its mission. It has teamed up with The Bower Coronado and Kind Traveler in the “Every Stay Gives Back” program, which donates $1 for every guest stay to the nonprofit. This collaboration has yielded over $570 in donations to date. The Bower promotes sustainability by being a single-use plastic-free establishment and providing reusable amenities for its guests.

Additionally, the Kind Traveler platform works to foster positive impacts from travelers. It has successfully raised over $1 million for local charities and environmental organizations through its initiatives. With Tim Chin at the helm, Emerald Keepers aims to expand these efforts and enhance the community’s environmental impact in Coronado.
