News Summary

Rear Admiral Len Hering addressed global resource adequacy issues during the Coronado Roundtable. He focused on clean water scarcity, food security, and the impact of climate change, emphasizing challenges faced by California’s agricultural sector. The meeting also raised awareness about the urgent need for effective resource management in the face of environmental challenges and population growth.

Coronado, California – Rear Admiral Len Hering, USN (Ret), emphasized the alarming state of global resource adequacy during his presentation at the Coronado Roundtable held on October 23, 2025. Serving as the Executive Director of The Center for Sustainable Energy, Hering shed light on pressing global challenges, particularly in the areas of clean water scarcity and food security, which pose significant risks on both national and international levels.

The presentation outlined several critical issues currently affecting the world. Among the most pressing was the scarcity of clean water supplies, compounded by inadequate water storage solutions and the rapid depletion of underground aquifers. Hering noted that desalinization, often seen as a possible remedy, is an energy-intensive and costly solution that may not be feasible for large-scale implementation. Moreover, he pointed out that California has not completed any major water storage or hydro-energy projects in forty years, putting the state at a notable disadvantage.

Population growth is another concern, especially in undeveloped regions where growth rates reach 13 percent annually. This surge intensifies the struggles related to poverty and food shortages, creating potential security risks. A staggering 40 percent of food produced and purchased in the US is wasted annually, exacerbating the food crisis. Looking ahead, global food demand is set to exceed all food consumed in the past 2,500 years within the next 40 years, raising alarms about sustainable agriculture and resource management.

Hering also highlighted the dire state of California’s agricultural sector. Due to land and water shortages, approximately 35 percent of California’s dairy farms have shut down, while many other farmers are contemplating leaving the state altogether. This trend raises concerns about food supply and economic stability within the region.

Climate change remains a looming threat, with rising sea levels posing risks to coastal areas and major population centers across the United States. Hering noted that climate change is leading to increased storm intensity and flooding, with Hurricane Patricia’s imminent landfall acting as a stark reminder of nature’s unpredictable power.

The Coronado Roundtable meets monthly to discuss various issues concerning regional and global significance, with the next meeting scheduled for November 20, 2025. Following his presentation, Hering encouraged attendees to advocate for policies dedicated to environmental protection and sustainability, urging everyone to consider the legacy left for future generations.

This meeting brought forth crucial conversations about resource management amidst growing environmental challenges. As the global population grows and demand for resources escalates, it becomes increasingly vital for communities and policymakers to come together to address these pressing issues thoughtfully and proactively.
