San Diego, CA – The USS Midway Museum, home to the longest-serving Navy aircraft carrier of the 20th century, is calling for volunteers to support its mission of preserving and sharing its historic legacy. Commissioned in 1945, the USS Midway served in the U.S. Navy until 1992, playing a pivotal role in significant military operations throughout its active years.

Once the largest aircraft carrier in the world until 1955, the Midway was also the first U.S. aircraft carrier too big to transit the Panama Canal. It actively participated in missions during the Cold War and the Vietnam War, ultimately serving as the flagship for Operation Desert Storm. The museum aims to enhance the guest experience and convey the historical significance of the Midway to visitors worldwide.

Volunteers are integral to the operation of the USS Midway Museum, making up the majority of its workforce, often referred to as the “skeleton of the ship.” Currently, there are 466 active docents who volunteer from San Diego and other states, including 38 from Coronado. These enthusiastic individuals contribute significantly by sharing their experiences and knowledge about the ship’s rich history.

Volunteer Opportunities

The museum is actively seeking enthusiastic volunteers with no prior experience necessary, as training will be provided upon onboarding. The available roles include Safety, Airwing, Library, Restoration, and Docents, giving a variety of opportunities for individuals to contribute to the Midway’s operations.

Interactive Experiences

The USS Midway Museum features various interactive attractions designed to engage visitors. Guests can explore 29 restored aircraft docks, enter accessible cockpits for photographs, and visit a public control tower and the bridge to sit in the captain’s chair. In addition, flight simulators allow visitors to experience operating an F-18 and engage in air combat scenarios.

A 90-seat theater showcases the film “Voices of Midway,” which presents first-hand accounts of the Battle of Midway, adding depth to the educational experience. More than 80% of the museum is open to the public, with expanding spaces and exhibits being added each year to continually enhance visitor engagement.

Contribution of Volunteers

The museum highlights the concept of “Midway Magic,” emphasizing how volunteers significantly contribute to the engaging atmosphere that the museum strives to maintain. Notable volunteers, such as Bob Breglio and Harry Thaete, have passionately dedicated their time to storytelling about Navy history and sharing their personal experiences, enriching the narratives that define the USS Midway.

Significance of the Museum

The USS Midway Museum serves as an essential attraction for history buffs, military enthusiasts, and tourists, offering educational and memorable experiences. By volunteering, community members not only help preserve the history of this remarkable aircraft carrier but also contribute to the legacy of naval history that continues to inspire the next generation. Interested individuals are encouraged to join and become part of a team dedicated to celebrating and sharing the remarkable story of the USS Midway.
