San Diego, CA – The San Diego State swim and dive team achieved a convincing victory against the University of San Diego (USD), triumphing 33-24 in the annual season-opening pentathlon meet held on Friday at the USD Sports Center Pool. With this win, SDSU has now secured victory in all 14 pentathlon meetings against USD since 2011.
The Aztecs showcased their dominance by featuring the top 11 pentathlon swimmers in the competition. Freshman Roni Black emerged as the individual champion with a combined time of 4:59.01. Joining her on the podium were Reka Nyiradi, the defending champion, who finished second with a time of 4:59.50, and sophomore Liv Peebles, who claimed third place with a time of 4:59.81, finishing a mere fraction of a second behind Black.
In addition to the top three finishers, further impressive performances were recorded by freshman Sierra Tallman, who came in fourth (5:01.35), and sophomore Alli Mann, who finished fifth (5:02.60). Other notable finishes included freshman Melanie Quinto in sixth (5:04.78), senior Moa Bergdahl in seventh (5:05.28), sophomore Kaydence Bispo in eighth (5:07.78), sophomore Elisa Branca in ninth (5:08.31), freshman Amber Janky in tenth (5:10.06), and junior Charlotte Sevin in eleventh (5:11.81).
Throughout the meet, the Aztecs claimed several event victories. Alli Mann won the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.96. She was followed by Kaydence Bispo in second place (51.60) and senior Alyssa Schlller in third (52.06). Mann further demonstrated her prowess by winning the 100 butterfly, clocking in at 56.62, with Nyiradi (57.27) and Sevin (57.98) securing the second and third spots respectively.
Moa Bergdahl also had a standout performance, winning the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.53, finishing ahead of Black (1:04.80) and Branca (1:06.05). In the 100 individual medley, Sierra Tallman triumphed with a time of 59.89, narrowly defeating Liv Peebles who recorded a time of 59.95.
The scoring system in the pentathlon awarded points based on the top three finishers in each event, with points distributed on a scale of 12-11-10-9-8-7. Additional unscored races were also conducted, allowing teams to assess their early-season training progress.
Among the other event finishes, Mann excelled in the 50 freestyle with a remarkable time of 23.88, with Camille Seiley and Melanie Quinto coming in second and third respectively at 24.45 and 24.82. Tallman edged out her competitors in the 50 butterfly, finishing just ahead of Sevin, recording times of 26.78 and 26.85, respectively. In the 50 back event, Storm posted the fastest time at 26.89, while Peebles (27.09) and Alex Downing (27.91) finished in second and third.
Bergdahl clinched her second victory of the day in the 50 breaststroke, completing the race in 29.69, ahead of Black (30.63) and Branca (30.81). Reka Nyiradi also put forth an impressive display by winning the 500 freestyle event with a time of 5:11.05, finishing ahead of Kaydence Bispo, who recorded a time of 5:14.87.
As the season progresses, the San Diego State swim and dive team will next face USD in a dual meet on Friday, September 26, commencing at 1 p.m. PT at the USD Sports Center Pool.
