Coronado – The Coronado City Council held a significant meeting on September 2, 2025, honoring local hero Kris Collins for her quick action that saved a student’s life while working as a nurse at Coronado Middle School (CMS). In recognition of her bravery, Mayor John Duncan designated this date as “Kris Collins, Heroism in Action Day.”

Collins expressed her gratitude to the community and city officials for their acknowledgments while highlighting the vital role of emergency services personnel and her fellow staff members in the incident.

During the meeting, Councilmember Kelly Purvis acknowledged the recent passing of Shirley Stark, who was an original member of the League of Wives, paying tribute to her service and leadership within the community. Similarly, Councilmember Carrie Downey honored Floyd Ross for his long-standing dedication to the Coronado Promenade Concerts and his contributions as a representative for the Council of Churches.

In addition to the commendations, the council discussed legislative matters including an amendment to State Bill 79, which has now prevented high-rise housing construction near the Ferry Landing. Mayor Duncan also addressed recent beach closures, which were attributed to water quality concerns originating from a storm in Tijuana.

The City Council voted unanimously to extend the emergency declaration regarding cross-border sewage issues for another 60 days in response to the ongoing water quality challenges.

A student representative from Coronado High School was appointed for a one-year term on the Parks and Recreation Commission, reflecting the council’s commitment to involving youth in local governance. Additionally, Teresa Magdaleno and Maria de Lourdes Irwig were appointed to the Cultural Arts Commission, adding to the diversity of voices within the city’s cultural initiatives.

The Council reviewed and approved annual work plans for both the Civil Service Commission, which focuses on equitable management and career advancement within the city workforce, and the Planning and Design Commission, which aims to review planning applications and uphold quality design in line with the City’s General Plan.

The next City Council meeting is set for September 16, 2025, at 4 p.m. at City Hall. Upcoming agendas are expected to include updates from NASCAR regarding a planned event at North Island in 2026, as well as progress on the suicide prevention project for the Coronado Bridge, which has seen over 400 suicides since its opening in 1969.

The Coronado Bridge anti-suicide net project has an estimated cost of around $140 million and will use a design-build approach for expedited completion. Additionally, NASCAR plans to hold a street race at Naval Air Station North Island as part of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations, scheduled for June 2026.

Public hearings will be conducted on proposed changes to residential properties, including the sale of condominiums on C Avenue and modifications to a historic home on I Avenue, allowing community members to voice their opinions on these matters.
