About the Mystery Book Club

The Mystery Book Club is one of several reading groups facilitated by the Coronado Public Library, which also includes the Spoilers and Best of the Best clubs. Jacqueline Luna, the Adult Services Librarian, has been instrumental in organizing these clubs and other community events over her 15-year tenure with the library. She has a strong academic background, holding both a master’s in International Securities and Conflict Studies and a master’s in Library Science.

Luna’s role extends beyond the book clubs, as she also coordinates lectures, concerts, and virtual programs aimed at enhancing community life through literature and the arts.

Community Engagement

Among the participants of the Mystery Book Club are Ted and Jody Henry, who have a unique background, having originally hailing from Cleveland. Ted Henry notably appears in the Netflix documentary ‘The Devil Next Door’, which explores the trials of Jan Demjanjuk, who was accused of being a notorious figure at the Treblinka death camps during World War II. Ted Henry’s career as a journalist and news anchor for WEWS Television in Cleveland afforded him insight into significant historical events, as he covered the Demjanjuk trials, making multiple trips to Israel throughout the proceedings.

The national and international focus on Demjanjuk’s trials, which began in 1977 and involved his extradition to Israel in 1986, showcased the intricacies of maintaining journalistic integrity amidst such complex narratives. Ted Henry has reflected on the evolution of television news and the challenges faced in ensuring objectivity throughout his career.

In their new life in Coronado, the Henrys express appreciation for the sense of community and the opportunities to engage with fellow residents through library events and book discussions.

Library Activities

The Coronado Public Library offers a variety of programs throughout the year, including summer festivals and author events, solidifying its role as a vital cultural hub for the community. Residents are encouraged to participate and support local initiatives to enhance the literary landscape and foster a love for reading among community members.
