El Centro, California – Three Imperial Valley Residents Graduate from California Highway Patrol Academy
Three residents from the Imperial Valley have successfully completed their cadet training at the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Academy, joining efforts to strengthen public safety across California. The new officers are Brianna Coronado from El Centro, Jose Angel Monzon from Brawley, and Dominque Turnage, also from El Centro. Each officer has been assigned to various CHP Area offices to begin their law enforcement careers.
Brianna Coronado, a 2024 graduate of Central Union Adult School, has taken her place in the CHP’s Yreka Area office. Before embarking on her law enforcement journey, Coronado gained experience in the restaurant business. Her training at the CHP Academy included essential topics such as nobility in policing, leadership, professionalism, ethics, and cultural diversity. Cadet training covered various practical skills, including crisis intervention techniques, mental illness response, patrol operations, crash investigation, and first aid. Coronado is equipped to handle the arrest of suspected violators, including those driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and has learned key codes relevant to law enforcement.
Jose Angel Monzon, who graduated from Brawley Union High School in 2020 and earned an Associate of General Science Degree from Imperial Valley College, has joined the Marin Area office. Monzon’s training at the Academy has prepared him well for his responsibilities as a new officer.
Dominque Turnage, another graduate from Central Union High School in 2017, has been assigned to the San Diego Area office. He has studied criminology at Imperial Valley Community College and brings five years of experience as a Combat Engineer Specialist in the United States Army to his role. Turnage’s commitment to law enforcement is also personal; he follows in the footsteps of his cousin, who is an officer in the CHP’s Border Division.
The CHP Academy’s rigorous training program spans 26 weeks and is designed to ensure that new officers are well-prepared for their duties. In total, 133 new officers recently graduated, ready to serve in one of the CHP’s 102 Area offices. The CHP’s mission remains focused on providing the highest level of safety, service, and security to the public.
As of 2025, a total of 364 officers have been sworn in by the CHP, with an ongoing commitment to train nearly 300 cadets currently, and another 160 preparing to begin instruction soon. This initiative is part of a larger strategy to address the growing needs of public safety across California, reflecting the CHP’s dedication to maintaining order and providing responsive service to the community.
CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee has noted the dedication exhibited by these new officers towards community safety, underscoring the importance of their roles in law enforcement. With each graduate stepping into a vital position, the CHP aims to further enhance the effectiveness of its operations across the state.
