Known for his groundbreaking college performances, Strasburg achieved a remarkable 23 strikeouts in a single game and holds multiple records from his time at SDSU. The induction ceremony for the class will take place in 2026, recognizing the careers of Strasburg and other notable players and coaches who have significantly impacted college baseball.

San Diego, CA – Stephen Strasburg, a standout former pitcher for the San Diego State Aztecs, has been selected for induction into the 2025 College Baseball Hall of Fame class, as announced by the College Baseball Foundation on Monday. Strasburg is recognized for his exceptional college career from 2007 to 2009, which included numerous accolades and record-setting performances.

During his tenure at San Diego State, Strasburg garnered nationwide attention in 2008 when he struck out an impressive 23 batters in a single game against Utah. This monumental achievement remains one of the highest single-game strikeout totals in the last 44 years and is ranked third all-time. He continued to excel in 2009, finishing with a remarkable 13-1 win-loss record and a stunning 1.32 earned run average (ERA), along with 195 strikeouts and only 19 walks across 109 innings pitched. His stellar performance earned him the prestigious Golden Spikes Award in 2009, recognizing him as the nation’s best amateur baseball player.

In addition to these impressive statistics, Strasburg’s final home start was highlighted by a no-hitter against Air Force, solidifying his status as one of the most dominant collegiate pitchers of his time. Furthermore, he made history as the only college player to be named to the 2008 U.S. Olympic team, showcasing his skills on an international level.

Strasburg’s exceptional performance at San Diego State led to his selection as the first overall pick in the 2009 MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals. Over his MLB career from 2010 to 2022, he achieved significant milestones, including becoming a three-time All-Star and earning the title of World Series MVP in 2019. His tenure with the Nationals established him as a prominent figure in professional baseball.

Induction Ceremony and Hall of Fame Class

The induction ceremony for the 2025 Hall of Fame class, which includes 21 members, is scheduled to take place on February 12, 2026, at the College Baseball Hall of Fame located in Overland Park, Kansas. Other notable members of this class include former Major League players Mark McGwire, Kip Bouknight, Mike Loynd, Phil Nevin, and David Price, all of whom have also received the Golden Spikes Award.

The selection criteria for this hall of fame requires players to be out of college for at least 15 years, ensuring that those inducted have had a notable impact on the sport. This class features not only former players but also six coaches who have made significant contributions to college baseball, including national champions Clint Evans, Ray Fisher, and Ray Tanner. Additionally, renowned baseball agent Scott Boras is recognized as a contributor to the growth and success of college baseball.

Strasburg’s Legacy

Strasburg, a graduate of West Hills High School, initially joined San Diego State as a closer before transitioning to a starting pitcher in his sophomore year. His journey included developing a fastball that reached an astonishing 100 mph, further establishing his reputation as a powerful force on the mound. His achievements at San Diego State are marked by several records, including the most career strikeouts (375) and the lowest career ERA (1.59).

Head coach Tony Gwynn, renowned in the baseball community, has previously commented on the extraordinary nature of Strasburg’s performances, particularly highlighting the significance of his 23-strikeout game. As Strasburg joins the ranks of the College Baseball Hall of Fame, his legacy continues to inspire future generations of baseball players and fans.
