Coronado Launches Valor App with Freebies for Military Families

The city of Coronado is celebrating the launch of the Valor App from May 5 to May 9 with a series of pop-up events at local businesses geared towards military families. This initiative allows military families to receive various freebies simply by signing up for the app at joinvalor.com.

Local businesses are participating in the celebration by providing special offers, such as complimentary items and significant discounts, to military families. As part of the launch event designated as Valor Week, residents are encouraged to engage with their community while saving money.

App Features Support Military Families

The Valor App was developed to assist military families in saving thousands of dollars annually by providing easy access to military discounts. The app identifies participating businesses that offer discounts without requiring military members to request them actively. Users can simply link their personal credit cards to the app, where discounts will be deposited as cash into a digital wallet, streamlining the discount process.

Support from Local Businesses

In line with the app’s launch, Rylan Touhy, a Navy veteran and a founding member of Valor, initiated the festivities outside Trident Coffee, where patrons who downloaded the app were treated to a free cold brew or coffee. Rylan, a 2016 graduate of the United States Naval Academy with previous service in the Civil Engineering Corps, is focused on fostering a supportive community through the app’s initiatives.

Another participant, Nicky Rottens, is offering a generous 50% discount for those who sign up for the app during Valor Week. Known for its long-standing 15% military discount policy, Nicky Rottens is committed to supporting military families and local bases. Isaac Micha, the co-owner of Nicky Rottens, is collaborating closely with the Valor team to effectively raise awareness about available discounts for military families.

Additonally, Bay Books Coffee Bar, also owned by Isaac Micha, is participating by providing a free coffee or latte on May 6 from 7 AM to 9 AM for users who access the Valor app.

Future Plans and Development

The Valor team is comprised of both military veterans and civilians who share a passion for supporting military families. Currently, the app is exclusive to Coronado, but plans are underway to expand its reach to San Diego County and beyond, potentially offering wider accessibility to more families in need.

With contributions from software engineer Matt Waymouth, the app has been designed to be user-friendly and integrates seamlessly with banking and identity applications, ensuring a smooth experience for its users. The Valor team aims to continually improve and refine the app based on feedback and user experiences.
