Coronado Councilmember Joins Forces with Meals on Wheels to Serve Seniors

Coronado saw a sunny day on April 6, 2025, with temperatures reaching a delightful 74°F. It was the kind of perfect weather that made it easier for people to step outside, enjoy their day, and give back to the community. Among those who took advantage of the beautiful day was Coronado Councilmember Amy Steward, who teamed up with members of the Sharp Coronado Auxiliary for a meaningful venture: delivering meals to seniors through the Meals on Wheels program.

Community in Action

With winds shifting from the south to a gentle westerly breeze, Amy Steward joined community stalwarts Jerry Winters and Barbara Newell, who regularly participate in the Meals on Wheels program. This program is a vital part of San Diego County’s efforts to provide nutritious meals to seniors in need. It’s not just about food; it’s about maintaining connections and checking on the health and well-being of elderly residents.

Steward engaged actively during the meal deliveries, as she visited seniors who rely on this service for both nourishment and companionship. During this time, it was evident that she truly values the impact this program has on the community. The Meals on Wheels initiative has been running for over 20 years, serving both lunch and dinner options to seniors for a modest fee. There’s also flexibility for those with health concerns, allowing for special food orders that cater to various dietary restrictions.

Volunteers Make a Difference

Jerry Winters, a regular volunteer, found the experience of working alongside Steward particularly enjoyable. He expressed a desire to sign up for even more volunteering opportunities in the future, showcasing the camaraderie that comes from serving the community together. Lee Cargill, the coordinator of the Meals on Wheels program, highlighted that one of the most delightful aspects of volunteering is the interaction volunteers have with clients. Building friendships through their deliveries makes a significant difference in the lives they touch.

Every volunteer typically serves about twice a month from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., allowing for a fulfilling routine while giving back. For those interested in getting involved, whether as volunteers or clients, simple contact options are available through Coronado Volunteer Services or the Meals on Wheels San Diego website.

Nutrition and Health at Heart

The meals provided by Meals on Wheels are carefully crafted, ensuring they are heart-healthy and nutrient-controlled. They focus on important aspects like fiber, calcium, and vitamin C, offering specialized diets such as diabetic-friendly, renal-friendly, gluten-friendly, and even a Latin menu for variety. The goal is to provide nourishment while also catering to individual health needs.

With the use of their eye-catching bright green Kia Soul, which was kindly donated in 2016, the volunteers make their deliveries look cheerful and engaging. This car has become a recognizable symbol of hope and care throughout the community.

Giving Back Beyond Meals

In addition to their work with Meals on Wheels, the Sharp Coronado Hospital Auxiliary has made significant contributions to the community, donating a total of $130,000 for renovations at the hospital’s Emergency Department and ICU. This commitment to improving local healthcare goes hand in hand with their efforts to support seniors through the meals program.

In this vibrant and caring community of Coronado, initiatives like Meals on Wheels demonstrate the power of togetherness, compassion, and the uplifting impact of helping others. So whether you’re interested in volunteering your time or signing up for meal services, there’s a place for everyone to contribute to the well-being of seniors in our community. It’s all about making the world a little brighter and a lot more caring, one meal at a time!
