Four exceptional students from Coronado High School have been awarded the $2,500 Marilyn Foster Scholarship by the Coronado Junior Woman’s Club. The recipients, Jaya Jost, Olivia McKissick, Chloe Quarles, and Alivia Schmidgal, have demonstrated strong commitment to community service and academic excellence. The scholarship honors Marilyn Foster’s legacy and aims to empower young women pursuing goals in medicine and community service. The CJWC encourages all graduating senior girls to apply for future scholarships, with fundraising events planned to support these initiatives.

Coronado, CA – Four outstanding graduates from Coronado High School (CHS) have each been awarded a $2,500 Marilyn Foster Scholarship by the Coronado Junior Woman’s Club (CJWC) to support their aspirations in the field of medicine and community service. This year’s recipients are Jaya Jost, Olivia McKissick, Chloe Quarles, and Alivia Schmidgal, each of whom has demonstrated a strong commitment to service through their academic achievements and extracurricular involvement.

The Marilyn Foster Scholarship was established in 2009 to honor the legacy of Marilyn Foster, known for her significant contributions to the Coronado community. As a dedicated military spouse, Foster was actively involved with local organizations, including the Coronado Hospital Foundation and the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park. The scholarship program aims to empower young women who reflect her commitment to community service.

Each recipient of the scholarship showcased unique aspirations and talents. Jaya Jost plans to attend the University of California, Los Angeles, where she intends to pursue a degree in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering to develop advanced cancer treatments. Jost’s involvement in CHS included participation in Varsity Cross Country and the National Honor Society, alongside a passion for art.

Olivia McKissick’s journey will take her to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she aims to study medicine. McKissick’s inspiration stems from her experiences as a member of a military family, using art as a means to connect with others. She served as president of CoSA’s Student Council and participated in various clubs, including National Honor Society and Long Distance Track.

Chloe Quarles has plans to enroll at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, with the goal of becoming an anesthesiologist. Quarles’ motivation for this career path is rooted in her own experiences with cardiac surgery. During her time at CHS, she contributed to the school by serving as team captain for Varsity Swim and participating in groups such as the Student Body and Best Buddies clubs.

The fourth recipient, Alivia Schmidgal, intends to attend the University of Southern California to become a military physician. Schmidgal has a rich background in competitive cheer and has also contributed her talents to the CHS Islander Times and the National Honor Society.

This year’s cohort represents the sixteenth group of scholarship recipients, and each young woman exemplifies a strong commitment to community service, a key criterion for the scholarship. The CJWC encourages all graduating senior girls from Coronado High School to apply for future scholarships to continue this tradition of support and recognition.

To further support scholarship funding, the CJWC is preparing for its upcoming annual fundraising event, Taste of Coronado, scheduled for October 8, 2025. The event aims to raise funds to continue assisting young women in pursuit of their educational goals.

For those seeking more information about the CJWC and its initiatives, residents are invited to visit the organization’s website at https://coronadojuniorwomans.org/. The CJWC holds significant appreciation for the contributions of its members and looks forward to making a positive impact within the Coronado community under the leadership of incoming president Chelsea Fox.
