San Diego: Captain Arrested for DUI After Sportfishing Boat Collides with USS Midway

A 60-foot sportfishing boat collided with the USS Midway in San Diego on Friday afternoon, resulting in the arrest of the fishing boat’s captain on suspicion of boating under the influence (DUI). The incident occurred around 12:45 p.m., as confirmed by Sgt. Armando Ramirez of the Harbor Police.

The collision drew considerable attention from onlookers, including witnesses near the Unconditional Surrender statue, a famous landmark commemorating the end of World War II. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud noise when the boat struck the museum ship.

Fortunately, the USS Midway Museum did not sustain significant damage from the incident. The sportfishing boat, however, left the scene immediately after the collision but was intercepted by Harbor Police near the San Diego-Coronado Bridge shortly thereafter. No injuries were reported among the passengers on the fishing boat, although it did sustain minor damage but was not taking on water.

Video footage captured by both the San Diego Web Cam and visitors aboard the USS Midway at the time of the incident shows the fishing boat approaching the aircraft carrier. An account shared through WarshipCam depicts the moments leading up to the collision.

The USS Midway, now a museum, has a storied history that dates back to its commissioning in September 1945. It played a significant role in various military conflicts, including the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm, before being decommissioned in 1992. Following extensive restoration, the USS Midway Museum opened its doors to the public in 2004 at its location across from Naval Base Coronado.

This incident highlights the ongoing issues surrounding boating safety, particularly the dangers associated with operating watercraft under the influence of alcohol or other substances. Local authorities continue to emphasize the importance of responsible boating practices to ensure safety on the waterways.
