The City of Coronado has appointed Tony Winney as its new Assistant City Manager, effective July 11, 2025. With over 20 years of experience in local government, Winney aims to enhance community engagement and collaboration in this new role. The City of Coronado has announced the appointment of Tony Winney as the new Assistant City Manager, effective July 11, 2025. Winney brings over 20 years of experience in state and local government to the role, with a notable history that includes serving as the Assistant City Manager for National City and various positions in the cities of Carlsbad and Vista.
Winney’s expertise spans several key areas such as budgeting, redevelopment, economic development, labor negotiations, human resources, information technology, and public works. He holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from San Diego State University and has been recognized for his contributions to local government, including receiving the Excellence in Government Award from the Municipal Management Association of Southern California.
In his new role, Winney aims to enhance the quality of life in Coronado by fostering collaboration with City staff and actively engaging with the community. He is committed to making local government more inclusive and accessible for all residents and plans to participate in local events to strengthen connections within the community.
Alongside this new appointment, the City of Coronado is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Deputy City Manager. This role is crucial as it will report to the City Manager and be part of the Executive Team. The Deputy City Manager’s immediate responsibilities will include organizational oversight and supervision of the City Manager’s Office, with the potential for expanded duties over time.
To be eligible for the Deputy City Manager position, candidates must possess a minimum of five years of responsible administrative experience in municipal government and at least three years of management responsibility. A Bachelor’s degree in public administration, business administration, or a related field is required, with a Master’s degree deemed desirable. The salary range for this position is set between $179,195 and $213,829 annually, depending on qualifications and experience, and a competitive benefits package is included, which features CalPERS retirement.
