During his tenure at San Diego State, Strasburg garnered nationwide attention in 2008 when he struck out an impressive 23 batters in a single game against Utah. This monumental achievement remains one of the highest single-game strikeout totals in the last 44 years and is ranked third all-time. He continued to excel in 2009, finishing with a remarkable 13-1 win-loss record and a stunning 1.32 earned run average (ERA), along with 195 strikeouts and only 19 walks across 109 innings pitched. His stellar performance earned him the prestigious Golden Spikes Award in 2009, recognizing him as the nation’s best amateur baseball player.
