Lubbock ISD's new administrative leadership focused on student success.
The Lubbock Independent School District has appointed Jack Purkeypile as executive principal and Vanessa Barboza-Silvas as principal of Cavazos Middle School. Purkeypile brings over 30 years of experience within the district, while Barboza-Silvas has extensive experience in instructional leadership. These appointments follow a recent addition of Miranda Rodriguez-Reyes as the new principal of Harwell Elementary School. All three administrators are dedicated to improving educational outcomes for students.
The Lubbock Independent School District (Lubbock ISD) Board of Trustees has announced the appointment of two key administrative roles during a special-called meeting held on June 19. Jack Purkeypile has been named the executive principal for the district, while Vanessa Barboza-Silvas will take on the role of principal of Cavazos Middle School.
Jack Purkeypile’s new role as executive principal involves serving as a principal supervisor and coach within the district. He brings extensive experience, having started his career in Lubbock ISD in 1994 as a teacher at Irons Junior High School. Over the course of his three-decade career, Purkeypile has held various leadership positions at multiple schools, including Irons and Evans Middle Schools, as well as Coronado and Monterey High Schools. His foundational education includes a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master of Education from Texas Tech University.
Vanessa Barboza-Silvas, who is stepping into her new position as principal at Cavazos Middle School, currently serves as the academic dean at the same institution. With over a decade of experience in instructional leadership and student support, Barboza-Silvas’s prior positions include serving as an academic dean fellow at Wolffarth Elementary School, instructional coach, and AVID coordinator at Dunbar College Preparatory Academy. She has also worked as a classroom teacher at several Lubbock ISD campuses and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry and a Master’s in Educational Leadership from Texas Tech University. Additionally, she is a graduate of the Texas Tech Principal Fellows Program and is currently enrolled in the Holdsworth Principal Leadership Program.
The recent appointments of Purkeypile and Barboza-Silvas come on the heels of a previous appointment in May, where Miranda Rodriguez-Reyes was selected as the new principal of Harwell Elementary School. Rodriguez-Reyes has a background as the campus assistant principal at Harwell and has also held various leadership roles across Lubbock ISD and nearby districts since 2010. Her experience includes working as an instructional coach and campus academic leader, as well as a math teacher at multiple Lubbock ISD locations. She boasts two master’s degrees in education, one focusing on educational leadership and the other on secondary education, alongside certifications as a principal (EC–12) and in English Language Arts and Reading (ELAR) and generalist education for grades 4–8.
All three administrators—Purkeypile, Barboza-Silvas, and Rodriguez-Reyes—share a commitment to enhancing educational outcomes and supporting the academic, social, and emotional growth of students within their respective school communities.
