Figjam Winery, where artisan wines and community spirit blend beautifully.
Figjam Winery, a new artisan winery, has opened its doors in Coronado, aiming to foster community relationships while offering high-quality wines. Founded by Jeff and Bev Jakus, Figjam sources grapes from Sonoma and Napa, producing limited small-batch varieties. With a strong community focus, the winery supports local causes and actively engages through events and social media, establishing itself as a local favorite.
Figjam Winery sources its wines from renowned regions of Sonoma and Napa, with the ambition of becoming recognized as “Coronado’s Winery.” The vineyard offers a limited production of 500 cases annually, emphasizing small-batch craft winemaking. Their offerings feature a Napa Cabernet from Mt. Veeder, Rosé and Pinot Noir from Sonoma, Old Vine Zinfandel, and Chardonnay from the Lodi region. The Zinfandel took two and a half years to make, while the Chardonnay is given special attention due to it being Bev’s favorite varietal.
The couple initially partnered with another couple to start the winery but later took full ownership and now operate Figjam Winery as a duo. A core focus of the winery is on camaraderie, friendships, and building connections within the community. Figjam wines can be found at various locations across Coronado, including the Coronado Fire Station Venue, Bridge Speakeasy, High Tide Bottle Shop & Kitchen, and Coronado Cays Yacht Club.
In addition to their wine production, Figjam Winery is committed to philanthropy and supports several local causes such as Operation Game On, the KMAC Foundation, and Make-a-Wish San Diego. The winery operates out of a custom crush house, which allows them to produce and bottle their wines without owning land or a traditional building.
Jeff brings extensive experience in the wine industry, dating back to 2003, when he developed wine club management software and co-founded a wine distribution business named Uber Vino. This expertise, combined with Bev’s active role in the winery’s operations, positions Figjam for success in the competitive wine market.
The winery has also prioritized community connection, establishing a strong social media presence, particularly after joining the Coronado Chamber of Commerce. Figjam Winery provides custom labeling services, highlighting its identity as a woman-owned business. A recent Artisan Series was introduced, featuring Bev’s watercolor artwork on labels, which are inspired by their time in Kauai during the pandemic.
Ongoing events at Figjam Winery, like ‘FIGJAM Presents,’ showcase guest winemakers, comedy performances, and educational wine sessions. Customers can purchase Figjam wines online, as well as find them at local retailers and restaurants.
The Jakus couple, who have been married since 2011 after meeting in 2008 via Match.com, have seamlessly blended their passion for winemaking with their commitment to community spirit. Their vision for Figjam Winery embodies artistry and fellowship, aiming to create an inviting experience for locals and visitors alike as they navigate the world of artisan wines. As Figjam Winery continues to grow, it remains dedicated to not just producing exceptional wines but also fostering a vibrant community atmosphere in Coronado.
Through their unique combination of high-quality wines, community involvement, and creative branding, Figjam Winery is set to become a cherished aspect of Coronado’s local landscape.
