Coronado, CA – The historic Hotel del Coronado has unveiled the results of a major $550 million renovation, revitalizing its iconic Victorian building and enhancing its blend of historical charm and modern luxury. This extensive transformation, led by Blackstone Real Estate, marks the completion of a multi-year modernization effort at one of the country’s most celebrated seaside resorts.
The renovation project affected the entire 28-acre property, with the Victorian building—originally opened in 1888 and designated as a National Historic Landmark—undergoing a meticulous overhaul that cost $160 million alone. As part of the revitalization efforts, every guest room in the Victorian section was closed for over a year, ultimately leading to an overwhelming surge in bookings upon its reopening.
Among the renovated spaces, the hotel’s iconic front porch and lobby have been updated to provide contemporary resort experiences while carefully honoring the property’s historical accuracy. The hotel now offers 404 guest rooms within the Victorian building, each uniquely designed featuring vintage-inspired decorations and modern amenities.
The Hotel del Coronado now boasts enhanced dining opportunities, introducing popular new establishments such as Veranda and Nobu Del Coronado. Veranda embraces a California-inspired menu that prioritizes locally sourced ingredients and provides guests with ocean views while dining al fresco. Nobu Del Coronado showcases chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s renowned fusion cuisine, offering local specialties and classic dishes like Black Cod with Miso.
The hotel’s historic ballrooms, including the Crown Room, Coronet Room, and Ocean Ballroom, have also been meticulously restored. Efforts to preserve original historical elements while integrating modern technology were a primary focus. A standout feature of the Ocean Ballroom is a rediscovered fresco dating back to 1888, complemented by refinished wood floors and preserved historical details.
The hotel is not only rejuvenating its Victorian building but has also introduced new neighborhoods such as Shore House and Beach Village. Shore House comprises 75 high-end residences available for short stays, complete with exclusive amenities. The gated Beach Village features renovated cottages and villas, enhancing the overall guest experience.
Previous estimates projected the renovation would cost approximately $200 million and be completed by 2021. However, the project faced increased costs and extended timelines due to the extensive nature of the renovations. Several historical structures on the property, including the Ice House, Laundry, and Power Plant, underwent extensive restoration to align with the hotel’s mission to maintain its historical integrity.
The revitalization effort is rooted in a master plan originating from a city approval in 2003, which included enhancing beach access, restoring key features, and updating existing structures. The hotel is committed to providing modern luxury for future generations while preserving the legacy of its historical past.
Current prices for rooms in the Victorian building begin at approximately $399 per night. With an impressive array of enhancements, including upgraded dining, spa, fitness, and retail experiences, the Hotel del Coronado aims to attract both past and new guests eager to experience the blend of its storied history and modern luxury.
