Fern and Woodrow Delight Coronado Rotary Club Members

News Summary

The Coronado Rotary Club enjoyed a special meeting featuring rescued Huacaya alpacas Fern and Woodrow. These friendly animals, saved by Robin’s Nest Rescue, brought joy and awareness to animal welfare during the gathering at the Coronado Cays Yacht Club.

Coronado – A delightful pair of Huacaya Alpacas, named Fern and Woodrow, made a charming appearance at a recent meeting of the Coronado Rotary Club. The gathering took place at the beautiful Coronado Cays Yacht Club, where the plush lawn served as a perfect grazing area for the friendly alpacas, fostering an engaging and interactive atmosphere for club members.

Fern and Woodrow were rescued from an alpaca farm in Fresno, California, located approximately 400 miles north of Coronado. The rescue mission was orchestrated by Robin’s Nest Rescue, a dedicated organization founded in 2021, specializing in the rescue and care of vulnerable animals. The founder, CEO, and president of Robin’s Nest Rescue, Kimber Williams, led the effort to save these two alpacas along with 18 others last January. This proactive initiative was necessitated due to the difficult circumstances faced by the alpacas’ previous owner, an elderly widow named Thelma, who encountered significant financial and legal challenges following the loss of her life partner.

Thelma’s hardships forced her to consider selling her farm, putting the fate of the animals she cared for in jeopardy. In response to her plea for help, Robin’s Nest Rescue intervened, ensuring that Fern, Woodrow, and the remaining alpacas were transported safely to Southern California, where they found refuge in various caring animal rescue sanctuaries.

Alpacas, being inherently social creatures, experience distress when separated from their groups as they form strong social bonds and establish hierarchies among themselves. It’s essential for their well-being that they remain in herds, which is a point of consideration for rescues and sanctuaries alike. The Huacaya breed is known for its gentle demeanor, standing between three to four feet tall and weighing between 110 and 190 pounds. Their amiable nature makes them particularly popular for interactions with the public.

During the Rotary meeting, attendees had the unique opportunity to interact with Fern and Woodrow, experiencing affectionate “kisses” from the alpacas that added a joyful element to the event. Such interactions are not only delightful but also serve to raise awareness about animal welfare and the importance of adopting and supporting rescues.

Robin’s Nest Rescue is renowned for its commitment to various rescued animals, which includes a diverse array of creatures such as potbelly pigs, miniature horses, miniature donkeys, lambs, Australian cattle dogs, cats, and tortoises. They offer private tours on reservation, allowing visitors to interact with and feed the animals, thus fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for animal care and welfare.

The Coronado Rotary Club, which convenes weekly on Wednesdays for lunch programs, features a range of speakers and updates concerning club activities. The inclusion of Fern and Woodrow in a club meeting exemplifies their mission to engage the community and support educational initiatives, while also providing a platform for the discussion of important issues such as animal rescue and welfare.
