Coronado Celebrates Excellence at School Board Meeting

The Coronado Unified School District (CUSD) held a vibrant board meeting on June 5, 2025, acknowledging the achievements of students and staff while also commemorating the contributions of retiring personnel. The gathering showcased a celebratory spirit with awards and performances highlighting the district’s dedication to academic and extracurricular excellence.

The meeting kicked off with a performance by the Coronado High School (CHS) band, who entertained attendees with musical selections from Les Misérables and various Disney Pixar films, under the direction of Matt Heinecke. This engaging introduction set a lively tone for the proceedings, which focused on honoring impressive accomplishments within the school community.

The board honored the CHS Girls Lacrosse Team, who achieved a remarkable feat by winning the CIF championship. Their undefeated season of 19 wins and a national ranking of 25th highlighted their hard work and determination. Principal Karin Mellina and head coach Carolyn Dineen expressed pride in the players’ dedication throughout the season.

Furthermore, the board recognized the Stop the Sewage Club as the “Student Club of the Year.” The club was praised for its proactive advocacy regarding the cross-border sewage crisis affecting the community. Club representatives Sean Wilbur, Quinn Reibe, and mentor Laura Wilkinson Sinton attended the meeting to accept this prestigious acknowledgment.

In addition to recognizing student achievements, Dylan Matter, the Associated Student Body (ASB) President, received accolades for his significant contributions during his tenure. He is set to further his education at the University of Southern California (USC) in the coming year. Matter will be succeeded by newly elected ASB president Haissam Kouli, who is poised to continue the legacy of student leadership within the district.

Prior to the meeting, a special ceremony was held to honor retiring staff members, including Allyson Bans-Silva, Dianne Chrisman, Sandy Davis, Chuy Jimenez, Jodi Judd, Linda Kullmann, Cecelia Marston, Yolanda Reyes, Suzanne Szalay, and Laurel Wheeler. Their collective years of service were recognized, emphasizing the importance of their roles in shaping the educational landscape of Coronado.

The board meeting also included a public hearing on the 2025 Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) Budget Overview for Parents. Notably, there were no public comments received during this item. Additionally, the board discussed the first reading of Board Policy 5112.5, which proposes revisions to off-campus lunch privileges for ninth-grade students at CHS.

Superintendent Mueller provided updates on partnerships, specifically emphasizing the collaboration with the National Contract Resolution Center (NCRC) and other ongoing district activities. These insights reflect the district’s commitment to enhancing educational experiences and outcomes.

The meeting concluded with remarks from board members, as they reviewed the discussions and outlined plans for future agenda items. The next regularly scheduled CUSD board meeting is set for June 18, 2025, where further advancements and updates regarding the district’s initiatives are anticipated.
