Coronado, CA – The Coronado Police Department is undergoing a significant leadership transition as Officer Keith James retires after nearly four decades of dedicated service, and Paul Connelly is sworn in as the new Chief of Police. Officer James officially began his law enforcement career as a Reserve Officer in February 1984 and became a full-time Police Officer on May 11, 1985. His retirement marks the end of an impactful era for the department and the community.
Throughout his distinguished career, Officer James faced numerous challenges and handled various calls for service. He played important roles as a detective in the Investigations Unit and assisted in border protection efforts as part of the Customs Marine Air Group. His leadership was further evident during his tenure as the President of the Police Officers Association (POA), where he showcased a strong commitment to his colleagues and the community. His long-standing dedication has left a profound impact on the Coronado community, which is now expressing gratitude for his years of service.
Paul Connelly officially took over as Chief of Police on December 9, 2024, following a period of vacancy in the position after former Chief Chuck Kaye retired on January 4, 2024. During the interim period, Rick Martinez worked as the Interim Chief to oversee the department’s operations while the search for a permanent replacement was conducted. Connelly’s appointment brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to the department.
Chief Connelly comes to Coronado with a robust background, having served as an officer in the Marine Corps where he achieved the rank of Captain. After nearly a decade in the military, he began his law enforcement career with the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) in 1997. Over the years, he rose through the ranks, ultimately serving as Deputy Chief and overseeing a workforce of approximately 2,600 personnel. His extensive experience in law enforcement positions him well for the challenges ahead in Coronado.
In his new role, Connelly has expressed a desire to get to know the officers and civilian staff personally, fostering a supportive environment within the department. His commitment to maintaining high moral, ethical, and professional standards is a priority as he looks to enhance the effectiveness of the Coronado Police Department.
