The festival will be spearheaded by Dr. Lars Hoefs, a distinguished cellist and founder of the festival, who holds a teaching position at São Paulo State University in Brazil. Dr. Hoefs started playing the cello at a young age and has developed a strong connection to Brazilian classical music, particularly the works of composer Villa-Lobos.

Anniversary and Goals of the Festival

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Villa-Lobos International Chamber Music Festival, which aims to broaden its focus from primarily Brazilian music to include diverse styles from Argentina, Mexico, Cuba, Venezuela, and other Latin American countries. The mission is to perform, promote, celebrate, and educate attendees about chamber music from Latin America.

Notable Performances

The festival will kick off with a successful show on January 10, 2025, featuring the Blue Rose Trio and pianist Aline Mareya. Upcoming events include performances by Marcelo Soares, a Brazilian violinist, and a concluding concert at the Spreckels Center Grand Room. This final event will showcase soprano Lisa Parente, accompanied by Dr. Ching-Ming Cheng on piano and a string orchestra conducted by Carlos Prazeres from Brazil.

Outreach and Educational Initiatives

As part of the festival’s outreach program, musicians will engage students through performances and discussions about Latin American music. Organizers emphasize the importance of including new compositions and promoting Latin American artists, ensuring that the younger generation is connected to the rich musical heritage of the region.

With the combination of the concert series and the Villa-Lobos International Chamber Music Festival, Coronado is set to become a hub for Latin American music and culture, providing the community with opportunities to experience and learn about diverse musical traditions.
