In Coronado, three individuals were arrested over a few days for various offenses, primarily related to mail theft and resisting law enforcement. The incidents began with reports of mail being stolen from a postal drop box, leading to a high-speed chase and subsequent arrests. Authorities, including the Coronado Police and federal postal inspectors, are investigating the incidents further, highlighting the increasing problem of mail theft in communities.
Coronado – Three individuals were arrested over a span of several days in Coronado for various crimes, including mail theft and resisting law enforcement officers. The incidents prompted police responses and investigations, with federal authorities now involved regarding potential mail theft charges.
On May 19, a 56-year-old male was taken into custody due to an outstanding misdemeanor warrant and was subsequently referred to an outside agency for further actions. This was followed by the arrest of a 33-year-old man on May 22 for operating a vehicle without a valid license. The penalties for this violation may include up to six months of county jail time and fines that could reach as high as $1,000.
The most significant case involved a 44-year-old male who was arrested on May 23 on felony charges. He is accused of resisting an officer using threats or violence, a serious offense that carries the possibility of fines and incarceration for up to three years.
The sequence of events began on May 19 when two individuals were reported to have stolen mail from a United States Postal Service drop box located outside the Coronado Post Office. Postal staff informed the Coronado Police Department about a male and female duo seen extracting mail from a blue mailbox around 2 p.m. on that day.
In an attempt to apprehend the suspects, an officer attempted to pull over their black SUV. However, the suspects fled, leading to a high-speed chase that extended onto the Coronado Bridge and northbound Interstate 5, where they reportedly reached speeds exceeding 90 mph.
Due to concerns regarding public safety amidst the chase, officers from the Coronado Police Department decided to discontinue their pursuit. The search for the suspects was subsequently taken over by the San Diego Police Department’s ABLE helicopter unit, which continued to track the vehicle from the air.
After abandoning their SUV at Tecolote Canyon Park, the two suspects fled on foot. They were quickly pursued by law enforcement, resulting in the immediate arrest of the male passenger. Approximately one hour after the initial vehicle abandonment, the female driver was located trapped in bushes.
The suspects, identified as a 32-year-old female and a 28-year-old male, both hail from Orange County. As the investigation continues, the Coronado Police Department is working closely with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service to determine the full scope of charges related to the theft of mail, which is classified as a federal crime.
This series of arrests highlights not only the efforts of the Coronado Police Department in handling criminal activities in the area but also points to the growing concern surrounding mail theft, which has seen a rise in many communities across the country. Authorities encourage residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, particularly near postal facilities, to help combat such crimes.
Further developments in the investigation may lead to additional arrests or charges as authorities track the extent of criminal behavior associated with the recent incidents in Coronado.
