His performances, including songs from ‘Cabaret’ and ‘Kiss Me Kate,’ impressed judges and audiences alike. This recognition marks a significant milestone in his journey in the performing arts.
San Diego – Bruno Dominguez Martinez, an accomplished actor from the Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA) Theatre and Drama Conservatory, earned the prestigious title of “Best Actor” at the 2025 Broadway San Diego Awards. The ceremony, held on Sunday, May 25, was hosted at the Balboa Theatre in San Diego, showcasing the talent of high school performers across the region.
Dominguez’s victory came after a competitive selection process, where he stood out among nine other nominated actors. His journey to the award began with a series of performances that included a medley from CoSA’s acclaimed production of “Cabaret,” along with a solo rendition of “I Don’t Care Much” and another song, “Where is the Life that Late I Led?” from the classic musical “Kiss Me Kate.” His performances garnered enthusiastic applause, culminating in a standing ovation from the audience.
Despite his impressive stage presence, Dominguez experienced disbelief and nerves when his name was announced as the award winner. His instructors, including Barbara Wolf, the Chair of CoSA’s Musical Theatre and Drama Conservatory, had expressed confidence in his abilities, recognizing the hard work that goes into preparing for such competitions. Contestants typically rehearse intensively, dedicating six hours each night to mastering new choreography and music, performing for judges multiple times during the selection process.
Receiving recognition as one of the Top 20 semi-finalists at the awards is regarded as a significant achievement due to the extensive talent pool across 33 participating high schools. Dominguez’s win emphasizes CoSA’s dedication to cultivating well-rounded performers who excel in acting, singing, and dancing—a testament to the program’s quality.
As a result of his success, Dominguez will join fellow award recipient Laila Varner on a trip to New York City, where both will compete in the prestigious 16th Annual Jimmy Awards on June 23, 2025. This notable national competition will be held at the Minskoff Theatre on Broadway, providing high school musical theatre performers with an opportunity to showcase their talents on a grand stage. Dominguez expressed his excitement for the trip, considering it a “blessing” and acknowledging the role CoSA and his instructors played in guiding him toward his dreams and skill development.
Over the coming weeks, Dominguez will prepare for the Jimmy Awards, where he will work closely with Broadway professionals, industry coaches, and choreographers. The intensive preparation aims to further hone his abilities as a performer and maximize his potential in the competition.
The Broadway San Diego Awards, which celebrate high school musical theatre talent, were hosted by Jackie Foster, a semi-finalist from the reality television series “The Voice.” The event not only highlighted individual achievements but also recognized collective excellence in the local theatre community. Cathedral Catholic High School’s production of “Once Upon a Mattress” was honored with the award for Best Musical, further underscoring the rich artistic offerings present in San Diego’s high schools.
Bruno Dominguez’s achievement is a significant milestone both for himself and the Coronado School of the Arts, reflecting a commitment to excellence in the performing arts. As he embarks on his journey to the Jimmy Awards, Dominguez represents the bright future of young talent emerging from the region.
