The Coronado Girl Scouts held a vibrant World Thinking Day event at the Coronado Community Center, engaging the community with educational activities and celebrating the achievements of Troop 6017. They highlighted their dedication to local pet safety and received recognition for their commitment to service. The event underscored the importance of grassroots efforts to inspire positive change and the role of youth in community development.
Coronado – On May 4, 2025, the Coronado Girl Scouts held a vibrant celebration of community engagement and achievements during their annual World Thinking Day event at the Coronado Community Center. The event was marked by a theme of “think globally and act locally,” aiming to inspire participants to create positive change in their communities and beyond with the support of various local organizations.
The day was filled with numerous educational activities intended to empower attendees with the knowledge to contribute to their communities. The Coronado Fire Department led hands-on CPR instruction, equipping participants with lifesaving skills. Additionally, the League of Women Voters provided insights on democracy in action, while Park Ranger Kyle Icke spoke about the Girl Scout Tree Promise in Glorietta Bay Park. The Peace Corps shared information promoting international peace and friendship, further aligning with the event’s global theme. Attendees also learned about sustainable cooking through the Healthy Kids, Happy Planet initiative and participated in engaging sessions presented by Emerald Keepers on composting and native seed planting. For those seeking physical activity, the Coronado Recreation and Golf Services Department organized indoor rock wall climbing sessions.
The event also highlighted the remarkable achievements of Troop 6017, which was awarded the prestigious Bronze Award, the highest honor for Girl Scout Juniors. To earn this award, the scouts collaborated to identify a significant community issue, develop a solution, and implement it effectively. In their project, Troop 6017 focused on improving pet safety by educating local pet owners about plants and flowers that can be harmful to their animals.
In an effort to disseminate their knowledge, the troop created an informative social media video and launched a blog aimed at raising public awareness about pet safety issues. They actively engaged with the community by hosting a booth at the 2024 Coronado Flower Show, where they interacted with over 300 visitors, sharing essential information about pet safety. Each plant pot distributed at their booth featured a QR code linking to their educational blog.
In addition to their community outreach, Troop 6017 made a visit to Paws of Coronado to gain insights into local pet rescue efforts, during which they made toy donations for both cats and dogs. The troop also collaborated with younger Daisy Girl Scouts to create dog toys from old t-shirts and cat toys from recycled materials, demonstrating their commitment to community involvement and sustainability.
As Troop 6017 prepares to transition from Juniors to Cadettes, their accomplishments highlight the value of service, teamwork, and leadership within the Girl Scouts program. Alongside Troop 6017, Nevaeh Henrich, a remarkable member of the Coronado Girl Scouts, was awarded the Girl Scouts of America’s Medal of Honor in recognition of her courageous actions that saved a life. Nevaeh successfully helped her best friend’s mother during a choking emergency by coordinating the Heimlich maneuver and contacting emergency services. Her composed response and prompt actions were commended by both the victim and Girl Scout leaders.
Since its inception, a total of 163 Girl Scouts nationwide have been honored with the Medal of Honor, showcasing the outstanding bravery and dedication within scouting. Additionally, an upcoming outdoor ceremony is scheduled to honor 28 exceptional volunteers from the San Diego and Imperial counties for their unwavering commitment to the Girl Scouts mission, taking place on November 5, 2022.
This year’s World Thinking Day not only celebrated the achievements of the Girl Scouts but also reinforced the importance of community engagement and the impactful difference local actions can make in creating a better world.
