San Diego Hosts 38th Annual Navy Bay Bridge Run/Walk

The 38th Annual Navy Bay Bridge Run/Walk took place on Sunday, drawing more than 10,300 participants and raising approximately $500,000 for Navy Quality of Life Programs. This popular event featured two routes: a traditional four-mile trek and a newly introduced 10K course.

The race began in downtown San Diego and concluded at Tidelands Park after crossing the iconic Coronado Bridge, which is typically restricted to vehicular traffic. This unique opportunity allowed runners and walkers to experience stunning views of the San Diego skyline and the surrounding bays.

Event Highlights and Participation

Hosted by the Navy Region Southwest Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) Program, this year’s event saw a significant turnout, including 1,700 runners who opted for the new 10K route. The favorable weather conditions, characterized by a light sprinkle the previous night, contributed to a comfortable running experience.

The participating crowd included individuals from various Naval bases, with many military families joining in the festivities. For instance, LT. Junior Grade Reno Librado took part in the race with his son, Ethan, showcasing the community spirit of the Navy personnel and their families.

Supporting Navy Quality of Life Programs

The funds raised from this year’s event are essential for the Quality of Life Programs offered by the MWR, which serves over 500,000 military members from five Navy bases in San Diego County. These programs encompass a range of services, including affordable fitness, recreational activities, dining, housing assistance, and counseling, aimed at enhancing the lives of service members and their families.

Captain Ladislao Montero, the Commanding Officer of Naval Base Coronado, emphasized the significance of MWR in providing essential services to service members during their time away from home.

Event Sponsors and Community Involvement

This year’s event was made possible with the support of several sponsors, including NEX, the Port of San Diego, SDG&E, and Leidos, who played a crucial role in organizing the race and promoting community engagement. Their contributions helped to facilitate a memorable and successful day for all participants.

A Unique Running Experience

The Navy Bay Bridge Run/Walk not only promotes physical fitness but also fosters camaraderie among military personnel and the wider community. The experience of running across the San Diego-Coronado Bridge, an iconic landmark, highlights the connection between the Navy and the local community, making the event a cherished tradition for many.

As a highly anticipated event each year, the Navy Bay Bridge Run/Walk continues to grow, attracting more participants and raising funds for vital programs that support the well-being of service members and their families, ensuring that they remain connected and supported throughout their military service.
