San Diego, CA – Aladdin Mediterranean Café has reopened after a voluntary closure due to a significant salmonella outbreak that affected nearly 100 diners. The restaurant temporarily shut its doors on May 1 to cooperate with an ongoing investigation led by San Diego County health officials regarding the source of the contamination.

Between April 25 and May 1, San Diego County documented 98 probable or confirmed cases of salmonella linked to the popular restaurant. Those affected ranged in age from 1 to 90 years old, with at least nine individuals requiring hospitalization due to severe symptoms associated with the illness.

The investigation into the outbreak remains active, and as of now, health officials have not identified the specific source of the salmonella. The rapid escalation in reported cases has raised concerns among public health officials, especially since the outbreak has seen nearly three times more victims recently compared to typical cases. Health authorities have advised anyone who dined at Aladdin during the specified period and subsequently experienced symptoms to seek immediate medical attention.

Following the closure, Aladdin Mediterranean Café underwent thorough deep cleaning and disinfection, and all food products were replaced to meet health standards. The restaurant was cleared to reopen on May 10 after passing a health inspection, receiving an A grade for food safety compliance. Additionally, all food handlers at the establishment were required to complete a clearance process prior to resuming work.

In light of the outbreak, three lawsuits have already been filed against Aladdin by affected patrons. Attorney Ron Simon, who represents the clients, indicated that over 50 individuals are involved in these cases, and more lawsuits may be forthcoming as symptoms continue to emerge. One of the plaintiffs, Charles McLaughlin, was treated at an urgent care facility after being diagnosed with salmonella. Another plaintiff, Nubia Munguia, experienced severe symptoms that necessitated hospitalization.

The county’s prior inspections of Aladdin Mediterranean Café revealed some violations related to food-safety protocols, prompting increased scrutiny during this outbreak. Health officials reemphasized the importance of adhering to strict food handling and hygiene standards to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

Salmonella symptoms typically arise 12 to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food and can last from four to seven days. Common signs of infection include diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, and vomiting. The illnesses can be particularly serious for vulnerable populations, including the elderly, young children, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Despite these recent health concerns, a social media statement from Aladdin Mediterranean Café noted that ensuring customer health and safety is the restaurant’s top priority. The café has celebrated over 32 years in business and has consistently maintained high health inspection ratings.

As the investigation continues, health officials remain vigilant, emphasizing the need for public awareness regarding food safety and hygiene practices at dining establishments. Customers who experienced symptoms after dining at Aladdin are encouraged to report their illnesses and consult with healthcare professionals promptly.
