Coronado School of the Arts Recognized for ‘Cabaret’ Production

News Summary

The Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA) may take home significant awards as its production of ‘Cabaret’ is acknowledged as one of the season’s top musicals. With standout performances from Bruno Dominguez and Katie Moreno, both receiving recognition as top actors, CoSA continues to showcase its talent. The full cast will perform at the Balboa Theatre on May 25, striving for honors that could lead them to the prestigious ‘Jimmy’ awards in New York City.

Coronado – The Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA) Musical Theatre and Drama Conservatory has received high honors for its recent production of Cabaret, which has been recognized by Broadway San Diego as one of the top five musicals of the season. This acclaim highlights the remarkable talent and dedication of the students involved in the production.

Two standout performers from the show have also received individual accolades. Bruno Dominguez, who played the emcee, has been named one of the Top 10 Best Actors, while Katie Moreno, who starred as Sally Bowles, has earned a spot as one of the Top 10 Best Actresses. Their performances have significantly contributed to the overall success of Cabaret and have been instrumental in its recognition at the event.

The full cast of Cabaret is set to perform at the prestigious Balboa Theatre on May 25 at 6 p.m. During this event, they will compete for top honors among multiple contenders. Winners of the Best Actor and Best Actress categories at this competition will have the opportunity to advance to the esteemed “Jimmy” awards in New York City, scheduled for June 23 at the Minskoff Theatre on Broadway.

This nomination for Best Musical marks the third time CoSA has been recognized in this category, further establishing the school’s reputation for excellence in musical theatre. Previously, CoSA won the award for its production of Legally Blonde in 2014, demonstrating a consistent level of high-quality performances over the years.

Barbara Wolf, the Director of CoSA’s Musical Theatre and Drama Conservatory, praised the exceptional work of choreographers Gina Sorensen and Lauren Pym, reflecting the collaborative effort that went into creating a memorable and engaging production.

Both Moreno and Dominguez expressed their elation and gratitude for their respective roles. Moreno described playing Sally Bowles as a dream come true and the chance to represent CoSA as one of the Top 20 finalists. Dominguez shared his excitement for performing at the upcoming Broadway San Diego Awards and the opportunity this event presents.

Cabaret tells the story of an American writer, Cliff Bradshaw, played by Luca Hansen, who forms a romantic connection with Sally Bowles. The production features well-known songs by composers Kander and Ebb, complemented by elaborate dance numbers and strong performances from CoSA’s skilled “triple threat” actors, who are adept in singing, dancing, and acting.

Notably, Cabaret delves into challenging themes and mature subject matter, offering audiences a profound message of acceptance and social awareness. Due to its references to antisemitism and sensitive topics such as abortion, the musical is recommended for viewers ages 13 and up, ensuring that audiences are prepared for its more serious content.

Tickets for the competition on May 25 can be purchased online, allowing supporters of CoSA to cheer for their talented performers as they showcase their skills on stage.
