Coronado – Earth, Wind & Sea, a beloved gift and garden-themed shop located at 1303 Orange Avenue, will close its doors for good after 20 years of operation on May 31. The store, known for its diverse offerings of curated items, has been a favorite among both locals and visitors.

Owner Rachel Sandmann has decided to close the shop amidst changing commercial property ownership in Coronado. The store currently features items that are available at discounts of at least 30%. Starting next week, remaining inventory will see discounts increase to 50%, providing a final opportunity for customers to purchase popular merchandise.

Earth, Wind & Sea has been a cornerstone in the Coronado community, offering a unique collection of art, jewelry, fountains, and a variety of garden and beach-themed products. Situated between Stake Chophouse & Bar and Better Buzz Coffee, this charming store has attracted a blend of passersby and loyal customers alike.

Rachel Sandmann, who has owned the shop since its acquisition from the original owner Lynn Daniels, brings a diverse background to her business. Before entering retail, Sandmann spent a decade as a nuclear physicist, followed by a successful career in the commercial technology sector. Her accomplishments include developing the first real-time internet traffic information system and contributing to the online presence of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. As a business development consultant for Microsoft, her travels were extensive, leading her to regard the Philippines as a favored destination.

Feeling burnt out from constant travel and seeking a shorter commute to the airport, Sandmann discovered Earth, Wind & Sea for sale while searching for homes in Coronado. After observing the business for a week, she made the decision to purchase it, supported by insights from her sister, Paula, who has a retail background. Sandmann then shifted the shop’s merchandise to highlight and promote local artists, which helped cultivate a unique shopping experience that encouraged community engagement.

The shop features a mini garden section and beach-themed corner, showcasing Sandmann’s passion for both aesthetics. Driven by a family legacy, she has also incorporated an array of jewelry selections, including the popular Holly Yashi Jewelry line. Earth, Wind & Sea has earned a reputation for selling distinctive items sourced from local and international artisans.

As the store nears its closing date, Sandmann reflects on the overwhelming support from the community. Approximately half of the store’s clientele are locals, with many being returning visitors. Sandmann has emphasized the importance of fostering businesses for artists and connecting them with shoppers, ensuring a personal touch as customers select their items.

While Sandmann prepares to close this chapter, she is considering future retail opportunities closer to her home in Solana Beach. The process of winding down the business has presented its challenges, providing her with valuable lessons along the way.

Operating hours for Earth, Wind & Sea until its closing date are Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm. Interested customers can reach the store for more information at 619-522-9633.
