Los Angeles is making Naloxone more accessible to combat the opioid crisis.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced a significant reduction in the price of Narcan, a life-saving naloxone nasal spray, now available at just $24 for a two-dose carton. This initiative aims to make naloxone more accessible amid the ongoing opioid crisis, where overdose deaths have surged. The CalRx program allows Californians to order Narcan online, promoting affordability and availability. Additionally, legislative shifts are in place to enhance access in workplaces, signaling a focused effort to combat the opioid epidemic and improve public health.
In a move that is sure to make waves, the vibrant city of Los Angeles is buzzing with news that could save lives. California Governor Gavin Newsom recently announced that the much-needed life-saving nasal spray known as Narcan (also known as naloxone) is now available for the incredibly low price of $24 per two-dose carton. This is almost half the standard market price, making it much easier for individuals and families to access this essential medication.
With the opioid crisis hitting hard, the need for effective treatments is more urgent than ever. Narcan is a lifesaver, capable of reversing overdoses from both illegal substances like heroin and fentanyl, as well as prescription medications such as oxycodone. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shared a shocking statistic: over 107,000 people in the U.S. lost their lives to drug overdoses in 2022 alone. That’s a significant increase from around 92,000 in 2020. Alarmingly, drug overdose deaths, particularly from synthetic opioids like fentanyl, have nearly doubled between 2016 and 2021.
The latest initiative spearheaded by Governor Newsom aims to make these life-saving medications accessible to everyone. He pointed out that “life-saving medications shouldn’t come with a life-altering price tag.” Through the CalRx program, California is in a unique position to leverage its status as the fifth largest economy to challenge the billion-dollar pharmaceutical industry. The goal? To save lives by ensuring that essential drugs like Narcan are available to all residents.
Now, Californians can easily order Narcan online through the CalRx drug program at calrxnaloxone.com. This program leveled up access to naloxone like never before—it was previously only available in bulk packages for businesses! This direct-to-consumer model positions California as a trailblazer in making naloxone affordable and available to anyone who might need it.
In addition to making Narcan more affordable, organizations that meet certain criteria can receive free doses through the California Department of Health Care Services Naloxone Distribution Project. The CalRx program has already seen impressive results, generating over $6 million since its launch for the manufacturing and distribution of naloxone throughout California.
In a significant policy shift, Assembly Bill 1976 requires workplaces in California to stock naloxone or similar anti-overdose medications in their first aid kits. This bill, currently pending regulatory approval by December 2028, has garnered support from a diverse range of lawmakers and health organizations who advocate for increased accessibility to naloxone. The emphasis is on improving workplace conditions to potentially decrease opioid-related deaths.
While California saw a troubling uptick in deaths linked to synthetic opioids between 2018 and 2023, there is a glimmer of hope. Preliminary data shows a downward trend in opioid-related fatalities, with just 463 deaths reported in June 2024, compared to a peak of 770 deaths in July 2023.
As the legislation makes progress, Cal/OSHA has noted that mandating naloxone in workplaces could potentially reduce opioid-related deaths significantly. However, they also raise concerns about the burden it may place on employers concerning safe storage and accessibility.
As California sets its sights on revolutionizing access to life-saving medications, it is clear that changes are underway to improve public health and combat the opioid crisis. With support from the community, legislation, and enhanced accessibility, there is a collective hope for a healthier future for all Californians.
